DAVE G'S 'RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE 3D' REVIEW:
Okay, I’m willing to admit that the fact that deep down I am a fanboy who loves the ‘Resident Evil’ series of films will probably affect my view on this film, and while I’ll admit there are some glaring weakness in this new installment in the series I’m still going to say that I like the film… what else can I say? This series has just completely sucked me in and is right up there with my love for ‘The Harry Potter’ series.
This time round the series finds Alice (Milla Jovovich – ‘The Fourth Kind’, ‘A Perfect Getaway’) conducting guerilla attacks on Umbrella Corporation Headquarters right around the world. After a chance encounter with the evil Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts – ‘Edge Of Darkness’ TV’S ‘Flashpoint’) Alice is grateful to once again find herself to be human. She then heads for ‘Arcadia’ the supposed last remaining outbreak-unaffected area to meet up with her friends Claire Redfield (Ali Larter – ‘Obsessed’, TV’S ‘Heroes’) and K-Mart (Spencer Locke – TV’S ‘In Plain Sight’ & ‘Cougar Town’). However when she finds Arcadia is not what she expected it to she and Claire are forced to move on in search for more survivors. On arrival in Los Angeles they discover a group of survivors holed up in a disused prison, trapped by the undead and with the mysterious Chris Redfield (Wentworth Miller – TV’S ‘Prison Break’ & ‘Law & Order: SVU’) in their presence.
Alright, let’s get the bad things about this film out into the open straight away. The most annoying thing for me was the how one-dimensional most of the bad guys and survivors turned out… especially the character of Albert Wesker who had very little explanation at all, while writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson’s (‘Death Race’, ‘Alien vs Predator: AVP’) attempt at creating some romantic tension between Alice and Luther would be completely lost on most viewers as Luther isn’t set up as a character… and as a result you simply don’t care if anything happens to him… or if he and Alice connect. It’s a shame that this happens because Anderson’s script is good enough to move the story along… so well in fact that when the credits started rolling I was already getting excited about the fact that there could be another film coming in this series.
On a lighter note Anderson does show that he is one of the few directors that understands how to use 3D technology correctly and there are some awe-inspiring shots and sequences… for those who have already seen the film think of the still-shot just before Wesker’s helicopter crashes. Anderson also directs action well and his really skills are really helping Ali Larter and Milla Jovovich become two of the best female action heroes around.
‘Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D’ is nowhere near as good as ‘Resident Evil: Extinction’ but is still a must see for fans of the series. While some stunning 3D work isn’t enough to make you completely forget about some poor script work it certainly does help make this a pleasurable cinema experience for all the Action genre fans out there. If you’re a ‘Resident Evil’ fan than this is a must see… but if you’ve never seen any the films I can’t see you connecting with this film at all… this is certainly one for the fanboys out there.
