Dave’s Shannon Barnett Quartet - 'Country' Review:

Shannon Barnett has shown over recent years why she is considered one of Australia’s leading trombone players… and from all reports her work with Circus Oz has to be seen to be believed – so there is little wonder why her Quartet’s new album ‘Country’ is such a joy to listen to.

Lovers of good jazz will go head over heels with this album that even opens the Jazz door slightly for those who have never experienced good jazz before. The album kicks off with the fast paced ‘Abercrombie Byron Hippie Knife Fight’ and then delves into the moody country feel of ‘Pesos’. ‘1234’ has a very bluesy feel while ‘Bumford Bells’ is slow and moody.

It is clear why Barnett once won ‘Young Australian Jazz Artist Of The Year’ when you hear her amazing trombone playing on ‘Bumford Bells’ and ‘Sidelines’. The title track ‘Country’ goes for a slower pace while the album is rounded out by the very good ‘Rabid Hawk’.

A great jazz release that showcases one of our finest musical talents.

RATING:- ***½ (out of 5)
