Dave G's 'Beard Of Bees' - Jez Mead Review:
Following his sensational EP ‘Sucker’, Melbourne folk musician Jez Mead has heading back into the studio and released the fantastic feature album ‘Beard Of Bees’… a worthy addition to the collection of anyone who likes good folk/blues/roots music.
Mead shows off his wonderful harmonic vocal stylings on opening track ‘Blackberry’ and then heads straight into the best track on the album the slower ‘Town’s Too Small’ – a song so great I found myself listening to it over and over.
The gruffer ‘Sucker’ is also a standout while ‘So Much Love Gone Wrong’ shows that Mead can also pull off a sweet ballad without it dipping into the cheesy area. Tracks like ‘Tree’, ‘Bird In The House’ and ‘Beard Of Bees’ are some fine smooth slower folk music that easily help you tune out the outside world, while ‘Devil’ (a duet with Julia Stone) shows just how good Aussie folk music can be.
‘Be Gone’ sees Mead conjure up a real manic sound while the haunting ‘Crooked’ is a perfect finale for a fine folk album that I will admit takes a couple of listens to get into… but once you have an album that certainly won’t disappoint.
