Dave’s 'Suburban Sharp' - City Sharps' Review:
For those who are old enough to remember the 70s in Melbourne you will probably have mixed memories of the Sharpies. Now Melbourne band, City Sharps have released their debut album, ‘Suburban Sharp’… which is basically a tribute to this subculture of Melbourne. And while it might not sound like an interesting album I can honestly say that this is one album that I really enjoyed.
The title track shows exactly what the City Sharps’ style of music is… and that is somewhere between alternative rock and punk, the amazing thing about a band like this is that they can even make a track like ‘Gangbusters (Sharpie Chicks)’ (which is largely about history) a really great track indeed.
Tone Biondo gets to show off some amazing guitar skills on ‘Is This Anything’ while ‘Dammed If I Do (Dammed If I Don’t)’ is a good little rock track that is certainly worth another listen. ‘I’ve Got A Secret’ is a real tribute to the Sharpies, it is old style Punk in its purist form.
‘Kings Of The World’ sees Sam Biondo’s bass guitar get a work out while ‘I’ve Got A Secret’ is much slower but still a damn fine track. And just to show that they still have some tricks in their back-pocket City Sharps manage to pull out ‘Another Drink’ – a track with a melody that I thought would have been far above these guys – serves me right for underestimating them. This fine album is then finished off with ‘These Things’ and ’30 Minutes’ – two raw rock tracks that make you wish that you were living back in the 70s.
A great concept album that is full of great music and has certainly made me more interested in this time period. ‘Suburban Sharp’ has made me really love this band so I’m really hoping it isn’t a one off.
RATING:- ****½ (out of 5)
