Dave’s 'Midnight Killer' - Dead City Ruins Review:
There are a lot of people out there eagerly awaiting the release of Midnight Killer from Dead City Ruins. If you’re asking ‘why’ right now then you really out of the loop of the Melbourne music scene, because Dead City Ruins have been ripping up Melbourne stages with their style of alternative rock since they arrived here from London. And after a listen to Midnight Killer I can guarantee those who are eagerly awaiting it certainly won’t be disappointed.
From the great sound of opening track ‘Where You Gonna Run’ it is easy to see that these guys are not only the real deal but one of the most promising bands to come out of Australia for quite a while. Meanwhile the pumping riff of ‘Damn My Eyes’ shows why these guys are winning over crowds week after week.
The guitarists (Tommy and Jake) get to show off their skills with ‘My Lai Massacre’ which has a great wailing guitar opening and then backs it up with a terrific solo later on. ‘Midnight Killer’ will certainly win over those who love 80s metal and it’s worth noting that it’s the vocals here that make what could have been an ordinary track sensational.
However, it’s tracks like ‘Blues’ that really make me love Dead City Ruins. Most bands these days simply don’t know how to create an energy like this, and while that energy continues on ‘Go To War’ it is the weakest link on an album full of gems.
‘Highway Girl’ is one for the hair metal fans out there (keep listening to the end because you’re guaranteed to love the scream that closes the track) while the epic sound of ‘Fallen’ would win over even the harshest critics.
This is an amazing album, actually it is the best damn heavy rock album to come out of Australia for a long, long time.RATING:- **** (out of 5)
